Let's Cook!

My good friend Emma recently showed me this fantastic cooking blog, called Smitten Kitchen. A few weeks ago we had a girls night and made asparagus, goat cheese, and lemon pasta; and watched 500 Days of Summer. I highly recommend both!

The Smitten Kitchen is located in NYC and is only a 42 square foot circa 1935 sort of half-galley kitchen (in fewer words... it's TINY!!). After looking through a few of her other recipes I was surely smitten. :) If she can whip up these fabulous culinary creations in such a small space, then surely I can follow suit.

I think my next attempt will be the Gluten-Free Chocolate Financiers. Mmmm.

Here's the recipe for the Asparagus, Goat Cheese, and Lemon Pasta!

Asparagus, Goat Cheese and Lemon Pasta

Adapted from Bon Appetit

As it turns out, goat cheese makes a really great quick, creamy pasta sauce. And whether you blanche your pasta with asparagus or you swap in fava beans or string beans or seriously, you name it, this comes together so quickly that I forgave it for not winning any beauty contests.

Serves 6

1 pound spiral-shaped pasta
1 pound slender asparagus spears, trimmed, cut into 1- to 1 1/2-inch pieces
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon peel
2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon plus more for garnish
1 5- to 5 1/2-ounce log soft fresh goat cheese (the pre-crumbled stuff will not melt as well)
Fresh lemon juice to taste (optional)

Cook your pasta in a large pot of well-salted water until it is almost tender, or about three minutes shy of what the package suggests. Add asparagus and cook until firm-tender, another two to three minutes. Drain both pasta and asparagus together, reserving one cup of pasta water.

Meanwhile, combine olive oil, lemon peel, tarragon and cheese in a large bowl, breaking up the goat cheese as you put it in. Add hot pasta and asparagus to bowl, along with a couple slashes of the pasta water. Toss until smoothly combined, adding more pasta water if needed. Season genersously with salt and pepper, and lemon juice if you feel it needs a little extra kick. (We did.)

Follow the Smitten Kitchen Blog and show your support!! I plan on it!

Well Hello Again!

(Artist: Betsey Walton)

This past week has been filled with lots of love and cheerful birthday celebrations! My sister's birthday was on February 4th. I basically attacked her at midnight (I love it when people do that) with her birthday prize (a yoga gift certificate)! She was thrilled! I also surprised her in the morning with apple pancakes. I used the Bob's Red Mill pancake mix, which is surprisingly gluten/wheat free and delicious. They ended up being a little more brown than my liking, but I haven't made pancakes in awhile so I was happy with the result. My sister had the day off to relax and have a day to herself. Andres took her out to The Ravenous Pig where she had a nice steak dinner, then we surprised her with a small get-together at home. Andres ordered a carrot cake from The Dessert Lady. Seriously. I did not know that carrot cake could be that good! The cake itself was gorgeous and ironically enough, upon closer examination, was misspelled. All I can say is that I really hope that Janelle had a "Happy Birtday!"

The celebration continued on February 6th in St. Augustine for my very dear friend, Jessie's birthday. A group of us met at a new Mexican restaurant for her birthday dinner. Followed by lots of catching up with friends, more carrot-birthday-cake and dancing. I hope that Miss Lane had a lovely birthday as well. She is a gem, which is something that I wouldn't say about just anybody.

It was interesting to learn that two of my best friends share very close birthdays. Although it does make sense that I am attracted to and feel comfortable around people who share their similar astrological attributes. Both Janelle and Jessie are Aquarians; strong, outspoken, eloquent, and creative. They inspire me to continually be creative when I am feeling stuck in a rut and lazy.

A week or so after I moved in I was using my sister's computer and noticed that she had a beautiful background photo. After commenting about how much I liked it, she showed me the blog that she retrieved the photo from. An amazing art blog, BOOOOOOOM had a feature with 64 photographs by 64 different artists, claimed by the blogger to be some of the best of 2009. They were all beautiful! After slowly looking at each photograph I continued to scroll through the rest of the blog. I found that an artist from Vancouver started the blog in efforts to create a community for artists to share, create, and inspire. The site displays artwork media such as painting, photography, design, film, music, and other "junk." Right now they are working on a collaborative project to aid Haiti. Check out the artists' work and support a good cause!

I love love love love love Betsy Walton's work. A friend recently shared her Etsy site with me and I was blown away. So dream-like, radiating positive energy. I was happy to see that she, among other fabulous artists are banning together to support disaster relief. Now the question is, what can I do to help out?

Love,
K

First Post

Hello to you!

Welcome to the Loveday Vintage Blog.

This blog was created with the intention of sharing my love for art, fashion, food, and life! If you have anything to share I would love to hear from you. Hopefully something I have to say will inspire you to go out into the world and do something creative! I have been keeping up with a few blogs recently that have motivated me to get off my bum, and I wish to do the same for you.

To kick the blog off properly, let me first introduce myself.

My name is Kimberly Luce. I recently moved from St. Augustine to Orlando, FL. Not too far of a move, but hey... it was still challenging to say the least. I lived in St. Augustine for about five years. There I attended classes at Flagler College and received my B.A. in Fine Art and Art Education. I am certified to teach in the state of Florida, but due to all of the cut-backs, it proved to be a difficult task. Unable to lock down a teaching position, I worked two part-time jobs, one at Cafe Eleven and the other at The Present Moment Cafe. Both so wonderful in so many different ways. I worked at Cafe Eleven for over four years. There I was able to make new friends, eat good food, and listen to some great music.

Although I enjoyed living in St. Augustine, I was ready for a change. Anyone who lives or has lived in St. Augustine knows that it is hard to leave. It's so comfortable there! So I looked to my sister Janelle for guidance and support. Lucky for me, she welcomed me into her home here in Orlando, FL. I am now working with her and her boyfriend Andres at The Black Bean Deli and helping out a few days a week at the ever so lovely Etoile Boutique. I am also in the midst of creating new art pieces; including paintings, clothing, greeting cards, and other odds and ends. I have never been able to keep a steady journal or sketchbook, but I am hoping that this blog will help me keep track of new ideas!

Thanks for joining me in new creative endeavors! Love and Gratitude.

Yours Truly,
K
